Med Gull

Second-summer Med Gull, Broom GP, 30th June 2008 by Steve Blain. After saying second-summers are rare at Broom in my last post, I go and find one! The black wing-tips are hard to see here because of the angle of the light.

Blackwits

Black-tailed Godwits, Broom GP, 30th June 2008 by Steve Blain. The winter plumaged bird is interesting; it's quite a bit bigger than the accompanying bird, with a longer bill - could this be limosa?

Med Gull

First-summer Med Gull, Broom GP, 27th June 2008 by Steve Blain. Med Gulls are always a bird to look out for at Broom during the summer months. Adults, first-summers and juveniles are put in regular appearances, however second-summers and winters (3rd calendar year birds) are exceptionally rare, with only a couple of records.

Owl Attack

Watched a Barn Owl flying past with food this evening, knocked from the air by this female Kestrel which was undoubtedly after it's catch. Both birds went to ground and could be heard protesting before the Owl continued.

Little Owl opposite Everton Road allotments, Potton - 13/06/2008

Rather distant photo. Seen regularly over past three weeks, but no evidence of second bird for breeding purposes!

Great views of the long stayer at DWE GP this lunchtime.

Goldcrest

This bird was seemingly attacking it's own reflection, flaring it's crest.

Honey Buzzard @ Whipsnade Zoo

Cliff Tack took this 'not-quite-a-record-shot' of a Honey Buzzard he discovered this morning over the Penguin enclosure, Whipsnade Zoo, flying in the general direction of Totternhoe. He used a hand-held point-and-shoot.

2 Red-footed Falcons

2 first-summer male Red-footed Falcons, Rookery South ClP, 1st June 2008 by Steve Blain. Dire photos but at least the two birds are in both shots!

Red-footed Falcon and Gropper

I tried to get a shot of the two Red-footed Falcons passing each other in mid-air..

Close, but no cigar.. :-( It was a bit tricky to work out what falcon was crossing the one you were following in the camera..

Another shot of the obliging Gropper at the MVCP, this time a digiscoped image using my parents Canon A720IS compact camera hand-held to my scope. I'm pretty happy with both Gropper photos, but I think I prefer the shot I took yesterday with my SLR, even though the image size is bigger on this one.. Photos taken by Martin Green.
