Lesser Grey Shrike

Just got home from work and thanks to Jim P:-) I got the nod that a Lesser Grey Shrike had turned up at Biggleswade Common. I wasn't sure I could get all the way over to the common from Leighton Buzzard in time before the light was lost, but left home in hope whilst praying the bird would still be on site, reasonably close and that the light would hold up for photo's.

I arrived about 6 ish with the light fading badly and the shrike sitting in a tree about 200 yards away and had more or less had given  up on trying to get any photo's at all. Then all of a sudden the Shrike seemed to liven up and did a few circuits of the fields as some Corn Buntings came in to roost, eventually settling and sitting on top of a much nearer tree, I quickly grabbed some record shots as enclosed as the light was really poor at this point, so very happy with the results given the circumstances.

A real treat and the 3rd lifer for me personally in 3 weeks in, Barred Warbler, Hoopoe and now the Lesser Grey Shrike and all in Bedfordshire who would have thought. I wonder what will turn up next week??

Dunstable Sewage Works 05-10-2014

Before the excitement of the Willington Hoopoe, I was at the Monthly open day 1st Sunday of the month at the Dunstable Sewage Works, It was really cold with the first frost of the year on the scrape which was full of Teal (no sign of the Gargany), the Kingfisher was hovering and feeding in front of the hide, three Water Rail were involved in a territorial punch up, 3 Snipe were playing there usual hide and seek game as was the Green Sandpiper. The Wren and Dunnock were very active and the Robin as usual was trying to rule the roost. Pied, White? & Grey Wagtail were seen with the usual Gadwall, Shovler, Tufted, Mallard Ducks & BH Gulls etc and far too many Cormorants.
A lovely morning made all the more fantastic with the re-appearance of the Hoopoe in Willington.
